Going into the 2010 gardening season, we currently have 2, possible 3 plots of a 5 plot total remaining.

Plot Size: 10 x 20.

User Fee: $25.00 per plot and includes plowed soil that has been enriched/fertilized over the last 3-4 years by manures from the farm.

Description: A well supplied water source is within hose reach and water is included in the user fee.

This is a “cooperative” style community garden in which we start with multiple plowed plots and as a group install supplied fencing fabric and posts around the entire plot for the collective animal protection of the total garden. At year’s end (Nov 1) we collectively are responsible for returning the land to the same bare ground conditions as we found at the start of the garden season (April 2). Penn State Master Gardeners (Caroline Lidie & Sue Kittek) have been assigned to provide several classes (modest fees required) and lend guidance and recommendations to our gardeners.

We have collaborated with Penn State’s Cooperative group and anticipate a student class designed, built and installed “Garden Shed” with a prototype ‘Green Roof’, the shed planned to provide a storage location for garden carts and tools which will be used by the member gardeners.

Also in the 2010 gardening plan is the development of additional tilled fields which will be employed as a farm pumpkin patch. During the season we will learn from the land as to its good & not so good points as in the past 8 or so years this land has been pastured. If all goes well, this could become an additional eight community garden plots.

We are limited in space, interested parties will be wait listed and contacted in the order of their contact

Here shows the progress of plants in one of the 6 plots at Flint Hill Farm’s SUNRISE Community Garden.

The peas in the foreground are just starting to wind there way up the fence; lettuce in the background stands about three inches tall and Mother’s Day is still a day away!

Volunteer Community Garden Manager Roger stands in front of the staked out area which will soon have a bed of crushed stone.

Once the stone is down, then a new green roof garden shed for our community garden will be erected. Keep watching future photos of the process. See what is in store for the roof.
